The city of Irving began as a settlement in 1889 as an area called Gorbit but was officially founded in 1903. Between the 1950s and 1970s, the city experienced a boom and a number of manufacturing plants operated in Irving, along with transportation, retail and financial businesses. The University of Dallas in Irving opened in 1956, and Texas Stadium was completed in 1971 as the home field of the Dallas Cowboys. Today the population is approximately 238,000 residents. A mix of natural, urban and business environments, Irving is headquarters to several Fortune 500 companies such as ExxonMobil and Kimberly-Clark, as well as other corporations like Chuck E. Cheese's and 7-Eleven. A notable landmark in the city is the Mustangs at Las Colinas - the largest equine sculpture in the world.
